I think the backstory is that Etta James saw some of herself in Billie Holliday...especially in the drug abuse. This collection shows how well she understood Ms. Holliday...yet she keeps the songs as her own. This is one of my all-time favorite collections of songs to listen to, especially when I want it quiet and sublime. It's almost a spiritual experience listening to this!!!

If you like this, you should definitely also consider Ella's album, Blue Gardenia, which in my review there, I thought was the Billie Holiday tribute I'd heard about that this album more clearly is. Timeless songs AND performances here that will stand up to as many listenings as you can find time for, I'll bet. M. B.

Cedar Walton is the piano player, arranger and band leader on this album. His playing is out of this world fantastic. The sax, trumpet and band are great. Etta delivers a great performance. The upper range is a bit impaired but the quality is still there. It is a real treat to listen to this album. I recommend dowloading in lossless format. Quality of the listening matters. Enjoy it!
