  • I like it!

So Sting’s voice is more gravelly than usual. So what. He sounds like an English minstrel singing Christmas-ey songs. « Soul Cake » ... good tune. It’s okay to experiment and reinvent once in a while. Beck does it ... why not Sting?

I bought this CD while standing in line at a local coffee shop and I look forward to it every single year since my purchase. I have two things to say…..1. For the people who think that a talented musician will continue to perform the same tunes over and over again because it comforts their fans, guess again. Sting has always been one to expand and grow…this album is no different. 2. For the people hating on his voice or choice of style….remember this one fact. Many of these songs were written close to the inception of secular music. How do you think the singers of the past would have sounded? Sting is a bard like any other from times long past. Keep that in mind when you slam his choice of literature in relation to his voice and grow up a bit. Buy this CD…..if you have an open mind and would love to hear a departure from the same Christmas music give it a listen. Still one of my favorites and I look forward to hearing it each holiday season.

Sting has once again pushed the boundaries of his musical expression reaching into the archives of Old English winter season folk songs. It truly a refreshing thing to see such a talented artist break away from his original style and freely pursue his creative impulse. I especially like "Gabriel's Message," "Soul Cake" and "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming."

Not familuar with any of these songs (except 'Hounds of Winter' &' Lullaby To An Anxious Child'). Love the organic musical arrangments of these 16 tracks. All acoustic instruments on this recording, don't think there is any electric. For those that don't know this is described as a winter album rather than a x-mas album therefore making it more universal through the whole winter season and not just the holidays. I absolutly love this new take on so called predictable and traditional holiday music. It's more like all winter long music. By it, it's amazing.
  • Unbelievably beautiful

Sting has talents beyond his years. This is a most special album with the best musical expressions of many new artists intertwined with his special voice and varied old musical instruments. Hauntingly beautiful during the Christmas season. It is a treasure to be sure.

Those who think Sting should "stick to what works" and make pleasant accessible pop songs don't understand art and the artist. This man is a true artist, not a puppet of his industry. He strives to be true to his own artistic vision. For those who can't or won't appreciate that about him and his work, I pity you. This is a deep, smart, artistically rich guy who gives himself to his art. I honor him for that and will remain willing to listen to whatever he deems worthy of release.

While this album is not what you would traditionally call "Christmas Carols" don't dismiss! This is obviously a labour of love or at least that's what I heard! This album captures the essence of Winter...and it's many moods! The musicianship of all involved is quite remarkable and for those of us who love Sting (in any capacity) really should take the time to give a listen! My kids especially love the chorus on Soul Cake!

a fabulous change from the typical Christmas carols that you hear. Old English, calming, and truly spiritual. I hope he comes out with another one.
  • Very non-traditional American, but beautiful lyrics and melodies of old.....

One must research some of the tunes and their meanings to truly appreciate these songs! Delve into their meanings, then listen...especially poignant with "Cherry Tree Carol", an absolutely beautiful song of faith.....
  • Great advent album

I was intrigued when I first heard about this album. Very mystical and contemplative which lends itself nicely to the advent season. This is a rare musical gem that sadly did not get much attention but I love it. Walk outside in the snow with this music playing as you walk and then you will appreciate the genius behind this album.
