  • Very Misleading Album and Misleading Group!

Although this album may appear to be a "Greatest Hits" compilation at first glance, it is actually a new album done by the current "Jay & The Americans" group on which they re-recorded several Jay & The Americans hits. It's deceiving because the fact that these are newly recorded versions is not indicated anywhere which is likely to confuse people. Also, I personally feel that the whole group itself is misleading! Although they do have several original members which they claim makes them a legitimate and genuine group, they don't have the most important original member... Jay Black. Jay Black was one of the original 2 lead singers of the group who sang on all the hit records. Although Jay wasn't his real name, he has always been known throughout the world as "Jay" of Jay & The Americans. This current Jay & The American group has a new lead singer who they decided to call "JAY". It's one thing to carry on a group name, and another thing to literally steal someone's stage name and assign it to someone else. I find it to be quite bogus! You don't see the Belmonts calling their current lead singer "DION" and touring again as "Dion & The Belmonts". So why do these guys get away with it? Well, all that aside, the recordings themselves are actually pretty good, which is why I give this a 2 star rating. The group does a nice job of re-creating the original sound of Jay & The Americans, while adding in modern instrumentation and a fuller sound. If you'd like to hear a fresher approach to your old favorites by Jay & The Americans, this would be a nice addition to your collection. If you are looking for the original recordings, or if you're looking to hear the voice of Jay Black or Jay Treynor (the group's first lead singer) then you certainly wouldn't want this!

If you want the real deal (original hit versions) buy the Capital records greatest hits LP. This one consists of all later re-recorded/remake versions. Same goes for the Ktel LP...all remakes.
