  • Fingerstyle guitar master showing his stuff!

John Renbourn has been on the music scene since the 60's and has been playing and writing fingerstyle music that defies typical i-tunes genres. His music is melodic and complex with a mixture of celtic, classical, eastern themes, and jazz influences. I was excited to see a new album as his last album came out about 20 years ago (A Traveler's Prayer). This disc starts with classic Renbourn style pieces. Palermo Snow, Dery Miss Grsk, and Bella Terra feature many of the aforementioned stylistic tendencies. There are some departures with Ugly James sounding like a 40's jazz romp with the guitar accompanying a sultry clarinet. Little Niles follows suit with what sounds like a bass clarinet on this eastern influenced piece. Blueberry Hill wraps things up starting with a lilting cowboy style arrangement and then modulating into something a little more funky. It's nice to hear some new music from John and if you aren't familiar with his catalogue try Nine Maidens or The Black Balloon...You will not be disappointed
