On this page, we have the 3rd Beatles Anthology album in the series, which picks up where we left off in 1968, going from the White Album sessions to the band's break-up roughly 2 years later. These Liverpool Lads have rapidly matured and are now heading into different directions with each band member going their separate ways. After the widely experimental, psychedelic excursions of Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and Magical Mystery Tour, the Beatles are now on their way to record newer music that foreshadows their individual careers. Here we see the alternate takes and versions of songs like "Glass Onion" from the White Album and other songs that would end up on Abbey Road and Let It Be. A couple of these songs were later featured in a few band members' solo albums, too. I like the acoustic demo version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with a little bit of organ and a 3rd verse that was never used in the actual song. The version of "Helter Skelter" sounds like a Delta-blues recording. Two of the unreleased songs, originally recorded for the White Album, are "Not Guilty" and "What's The New Mary Jane." We also come across demos of other songs from this period like "Come and Get It." There is a medley of early rock 'n' roll songs and a version of "Get Back" from the rooftop concert, both recorded in January 1969. I really like the vocal-only version of "Because" as well as the different versions of "The Long and Winding Road" and "Let It Be" before they were released on the last studio album by the Fab Four. "Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues" was a song that Buddy Holly did and we hear a cover version on this album with John singing. I like the earlier rendition of "Ain't She Sweet" from Anthology 1 than the one listed above. As you may have noticed, these albums of the Beatles Anthology accurately showcase how much the Fab Four progressed with their music through the years they were together as a band. Like the other two albums, it looks like a very good buy and is perfect for anyone that wants to know about later Beatles music. Get Anthology 3 now if you want it, but don't forget about Volumes 1 and 2 so you can complete the whole series.
