This was the turning point from thrash to rock. Even though that sounds negative, there are many great songs coming out of this. Enter Sandman, despite being overrated is still a great song, and Wherever I May Roam is my personal favorite on this album with its killer riff. The soft stuff like Unforgiven is OK. And that is what sums up the black album. Not awesome like RTL but not awful like the early 200s. 3 stars

Best Metal Album IN METALLICA’S HISTORY!!!
I can not give any reason to not like this album. It was the first one I heard, and it is great all the way through. Do I need to say more?
Great follow up to injustice
Not my favorite album by these guys, but it doesn’t make it any less good. After all, it’s many fans favorite Metallica album.
Metallica is easily one of the best Metal bands of all time, especially with an album like this!
Their last good album

This is the last decent album Metallica made
For many, this was their "first" album.

Hey, anyone remember when Jethro Tull beat Metallica in the grammy's for "best metal album," back in the day? JT was insulted. Metallica was insulted. Everyone knew the system was rigged and BS.
All that changed when this album came out.
Every metal band musician learned this album. It influenced everyone in some way.
Some hated it and swore it's when Metallica "went pop."
Some praised it because KH sat downa nd learned some fancy licks from the world's greatest fusion guitar soloist.
CONGRATS! YOU CAN NOW PLAY A FEW LICKS LIKE STEVE VAI AND JOE SETRIANI. Did I even SPELL Joe's surname right?! Doesn't matter!
It's not all about KH, and it's not about Jason Newstead, and it's not even about Lars a decade prior to painting like a Jackson Pollok ripoff.
What matters, here, is that Metallica EVOLVED to the highest level of mix and master, to highest level of lyrical genius, and the highest level of musicality in their song writing. This is the pinnacle, boys and girls.
After this, we have Hero of the Day, and then Fuel. Sorry, everybody.
So, just remember, this isn't Metallica's first album. It was their last. Give it some love.
Oh, and Metallica, hurry up and remaster this, so that my subwoofer falls in love all over again. Thanks, gang.
