  • Very Intelligently Made

I don't usually listen to rap but after reading some reviews I bought the "Good Kid MAAD City" album by Kendrick Lamar and it's actually really really intelligently made concept album. At the start many of the songs are the overly sexual, self promoting type of rap that is often associated with the genre but as the main character progresses through the album it becomes a lot more introspective and in a way even makes fun itself and that sort of music; similar to how in Pink Floyd's The Wall, the song "In The Flesh" uses xenophobic rants to comment on the themes it's trying to convey. The album also does a lot of really smart and subtle things with the audio to convey what is happening in the story; for example in one song where the character is reflecting upon his relationship with his girlfriend there is a subtle repeating female vocal in the background that fits because it's conveying that she's in the back of his mind during the song. Another example is in a song about alcoholism where more background vocals are added in to reflect how peer pressure can cause people to drink more. If I had more time or more knowledge about music theory I'd want to make an in depth analysis of it, but I think this'll do for now.
  • Gave me hope

This album and to pimp a butterfly gave me hope that good hip hop will still be around and I have noticed ever since he has been around he has encouraged people to put more effort into their music
