  • The MESS in B-Minor

I’ve listened to this recording a few times….until my irritation became so severe that I deleted it from my library. It just goes to show you that you could assemble what were supposed to be some of the finest performers of their time and a miserable performance can result. It is so rhythmically erratic and sloppily performed that I did a few double takes just to confirm that is actually was Von Karajan in the driver’s seat. Boo Herbie, Boo! No concept of phrasal articulation, or the end of a measure. If you could transcribe this performance to some sort of visual interpretation watching it would make you seasick. Keep shopping, this was a waste of money.

This is from you: “If you prefer …baroque style playing, then avoid this…” This is from me: Well, yeah. I do prefer Baroque-style playing for this work - considering the fact that this is a BAROQUE PIECE!!! What do YOU want from Bach?
  • Not worth it.

This is possibly one of the weakest recordings of the Mass I have ever heard. The choir is not refined, the tempos are all very odd, and there is no baroque phrasing to speak of. If you are looking for a good recording of a stylistically accurate performance with a captivating choir, look elsewhere. I purchased this recording and had to delete if from my library half way through the Credo.
  • What the heck?

I've been perusing different reviews from iTunes and many other places and I've found many, many negative ones that degrade this recording. I've possesed this recording for a very long time now and I have spent some time considering what the other reviews have said: "Too Magestic, too slow, off key and beat, too heavy, too romantic, does not fit the intentions of the composer" and so forth. But action speaks louder than words. The music disproves all these negative comments. I'm here to say that this is a wonderful recording, very rewarding. I find it to be very religious and emotional. If you prefer more dry and clear, baroque style playing, then avoid this. I highly recommend this recording!

This recording is very difficult to sit through. Although the arias and duets are well performed, the work falls apart everytime there is a chorus. The orchestra and chorus are not together- making the performance sound clumsy. The trumpets sound shrill, but most irritating of all is the fact that the sopranos are chronically flat, as are the other sections, on occasion. If you are pitch sensitive, this is not the recording for you.
  • Another splendid performance.

The Mass in B Minor is often considered one of the greatest masterworks of all time. The Berlin Philharmonic certainly shows the beauty of this piece in their illustrious performance. Certainly a recording worth having in your library.
  • Dissapointed.

I'm playing flute in a performance of the Mass, so I bought this to have a recording on hand. I feel that the chorus and the orchestra are not together most of the time, and for me to have bought this for a reference I was very dissapointed. The woodwinds and chorus are very good in this recording, but I can barely stand to listen to it due to the crass timbre of the trumpets. In short, the trumpets ruined this recording and I suggest you buy another edition if you want to hear what this work is really supposed to sound like.
