    Thoroughly modern!
  • My favorite Brandenburg recording

5 stars if the harpsichord solo in the 5th concerto were longer. The 1st & 6th concertos are absolutely sublime. The period instruments add a wonderful texture. Great sound.

This is a great recording of the Brandenburg Concertos. AofAM plays superb. The tempos are slightly faster than others, but I think they are true to what Bach intended. It's amazing. This recording also costs less than others.

This is a must buy! AAM is simply the best. Masetro Hogwood, uses period correct instruments and the number of musicans that the composor intented. I have several recordings of the Brandenburg Concertos, but this one is by far the best! If you are classical music purist, like me, then only buy AAM recordings.

This Recording is superb. The use of period instruments adds such depth and beauty to the recording however, I was very disappointed that Christopher Hogwood chose the more simple edition of the 5th concerto - the harpsichord Cadenza/Solo at the end of the first movement is very weak compared to the other edition written by J.S. Bach. I purchased this recording in hopes that it contained the more "amazing" of the harpsichord solos. It was not marked on Itunes to let the purchaser know what edition it contained(or at least I wasn't aware) The clarity of the recording is great. You can hear each individual note especially in the harpsichord which sometimes gets lost or muddled in other recordings I have heard. Each concerto is played at a very nice tempo. Currently these concertos are on repeat on my computer.

  • Period Instruments Made the Difference

I've certainly heard the Brandenburg Concertos before but this is my first experience on period instruments and I find that it greatly added to my enjoyment. As a historian, whenever I have the chance to listen to music as it was originally written and intended, it's a thrill. This album fulfilled its mission nicely. I'm re-listening to the marvelous credenza in the 5th - 1st movement again. Ah, on a cemballo!!! How interesting! Much better than the more common harpsichord.
  • Excellent Sound and Performance

I have three versions of the Brendenburgs in my library and Hogwood's with AAM is by far the best. Sound is clear and the performances on period instruments allow one to hear the music as the composer would have.

Having been a fan of Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music for some 20 years (and a fan of Bach's music for even longer), I truly enjoyed listening to these concertos. Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music perform these works on period instruments with the numbers of musicians as originally intended by the composer. The result of these efforts is a body of work that contemporary Kings and Princes would have easily recognized and enjoyed.
