"Hey nineteen, that's 'Retha Franklin she don't remember the queen of soul." Was she the queen of soul? She never made an album on this level. Etta James went to Muscle Shoals to resurrect her career. Her career was in the doldrums and she hooked up with Rick Hall and the Swampers and made the best R&B album of all time in my opinion. The first track "Call Mama" sets the tone of the entire album. Horns come in over the top and the back beat of the drums and and bass support the entire album. These weren't any ordinary session musicians, they are the legendary Swampers and they laid down a sound that has never been duplicated. Etta James at her very finest. And this album is the finest sound in R&B.

This may rank as the best soul/blues album of all time. The incredible version of 'I'd Rather Go Blind' is worth the price of admission on its own. The rest are frosting on a very, very good cake.

Etta James is in my opinion what all other genres of music were missing. She has that soulful touch to each of her songs and yet still finds time to sing her heart out and show off her vocal talents. Songs as upbeat as "Tell Mama" to soulful blues like "The Love of my man" you can't go wrong with this album!
