  • Luciano Pavarotti O Sole Mio

    By Pavarotti review
Back in the early 1980's, I was fortunate enough to have tickets to the San Francisco Opera's La Boheme with Pavarotti. The season tickets were purchased months in advance. Pavarotti had a history of cancelling after several performances. My tickets were for the 5th performance and I was worried. The day arrived and no word that he had cancelled. With great anticipation, we drove from Sacramento to San Francisco, still no news that he had cancelled. We arrived and after years of hoping and wishing to see the great tenor live, it was almost time! As we walked into the opera house, we were handed a flier stating a replacement for Pavarotti!! I couldn't believe it and although the replacement (I forget the tenor after all these years) was magnificant, my evening was ruined. I vowed never again to even attempt to get tickets to see Pavarotti in opera or recital again. Then 20+ years later, I heard Pavarotti was going to be in recital here in Sacramento. I bit the bullet and purchased tickets. Finally, after all those years, I heard him live. Although no longer able to hit the high C, he still performed like the great tenor he was. Today, with iTunes and iPods, I have the pleasure to hear and see him in concert over and over again! He is , by far, the greatest tenor that ever lived!

There is no question, Luciano was the top tenor in opera. Placido always was the better actor of the three, but Luciano had the voice, strong stage presence and was the leader in aria type concerts - he brought many people to appreicate opera. His rendition of Ole Sole Mio delivered seriously or with a slight twist of comedy is the best.
